This last Saturday night we began our exploration of Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” In the next few weeks our team will “unpack” this Beatitude from various angles and depths.
Some basics I wanted to cover is what these words actually mean. To hunger and to thirst for righteousness. Then to be filled. Jesus was telling us that when we allow ourselves to see our own great need for His righteousness, He will see to it that we will have it to the fullest. In that state of being full, we are still in a place of hungering and thirsting for righteousness because there is always more.
Righteousness, in it’s simplest interpretation, is God’s right way of doing things. We have plenty of instruction in the Bible on how He operates (which always boils down to love, because He IS love). However, doing things His right way also requires communion with Him. Including God in reactions, decisions, and and even our motivations. We can always check in with Holy Spirit on these things.
How about the thirst and the hunger? How do we stir that up? Well, inherently, we already are hungry and thirsty for His way, even when we are not aware that we are. Just like with our vast variety of things to eat, we often intake things that are tasty but not nutritious. A whole lot of that and we start to forget that our body is actually craving natural sustenance that God made for our health. But to the core, we know what will cause us to function much better in the long run. It’s this way with righteousness also. We definitely make many choices that are not God’s way of doing things. A whole lot of that and we forget that what we really want is His better way. SO, to get to the place where we feel that hunger and that thirst again, we should put some things away, stop reacting in fear and anger and so on and so on. Holy Spirit is right here to help us know what things are harming us that we can say goodbye to. He will guide us right back to where we see our need and feel that hunger and thirst for His way again.
He always wants the very best for the ones He loves…the ones He created to be with in the best relationship possible. And He wants us to be the healthiest we can be in our relationships here on Earth as well.
God’s right way of doing things is attainable and He promises to fill us with that when we really realize that that’s what we crave!
