LEARNING HOW TO PRAY - by Brent Lokker

Beginning this Saturday night at Blazing Fire, we’ll begin a series focusing on the models of prayer we find in the New Testament, starting with the Lord’s Prayer taught by Jesus and moving into the prayers of Paul, the Apostle.

There’s a fascinating Scripture in 1 John 5:14-15 that says:

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Naturally, the follow up question to this would be: How can I know the will of God to agree with it?

The simple answer is intimacy—time spent connecting with God’s heart. In a marriage, if one partner desires an intimate heart to heart connection but the other does not and has closed off their heart, can there be an intimate heart to heart connection? No, there cannot. God’s desire for heart to heart intimate connection with each of his children will not change. How do we open ourselves up to that kind of intimacy with him?

Consider this kind of intimacy in prayer described by an Episcopal priest, Adam Bucko:

“When you pray, talk to God just as if you were talking to your best friend. Tell the Holy One everything. Especially, dedicate specific times each day when you tell God about all your worries, all your hurts, all of your problems. Take off your mask and just speak. If you do that, if you really let your whole essence speak to God like that, some days there will be a lot of tears. But that’s a good thing. And when you are done telling God about your hurts, … just silently rest in God, letting God hold you. And then for the rest of the day practice joy and optimism knowing that you are God’s beloved child, knowing that you are loved, and knowing that you are carrying a great gift in your heart....”

Let’s journey deeper together into the heart of God and learn how to interact with him as his beloved, sense his good heart and agree with his Life-flow!
